A Brief History of Kylemore Abbey
Kylemore Abbey has a rich and romantic history that begins in the 19th century. It was originally built as a private home by Mitchell Henry, a wealthy English politician and doctor, who was inspired by the stunning Connemara landscape during his honeymoon in Ireland. Construction began in 1867, and the grand neo-Gothic castle was completed in 1871, intended as a gift for his beloved wife, Margaret. Tragically, Margaret died just a few years later while travelling in Egypt, and Mitchell built a beautiful Gothic church on the grounds in her memory.
In 1920, the estate was purchased by Benedictine nuns who had fled war-torn Belgium during World War I. They established a monastery and opened a boarding school for girls, which operated until 2010. The nuns also began producing handmade goods like chocolates, soaps, and pottery, helping to support the upkeep of the Abbey. Today, Kylemore Abbey is one of Ireland’s most beloved heritage attractions, blending a tale of devotion, resilience, and peace with the natural beauty of Connemara.
